_______________

This two-day workshop will be devoted to representations of the underprivileged collective and mass identities in 19th century literature of the Russian empire. Attuning to the interrelationship between literary form and social formations, our discussions will address how fiction grapples with ambiguous categories such as society, class, the narod, and the masses in relation to peasantry, workers, and petty bourgeoise among others. Special attention will be paid to literary crowding and accumulation as formal features reflecting on wider political and socioeconomic transformations of the time.
