In the long nineteenth century, biological theories of evolution and development became powerful resources to explain not only the origin and diversity of organisms but also social, political and cultural phenomena. It is of particular interest (although rarely addressed) how these theories were utilised in imperial configurations, where they served to deal with ethnic and cultural heterogeneity, while they also demarcated anthropological and national boundaries. The tandem lecture explores these issues for the Russian and British Empires respectively, followed by a more encompassing, comparative discussion.

Marina Mogilner hält den Edward and Marianna Thaden Chair in Russian and East European Intellectual History an der University of Illinois at Chicago und ist derzeit Gastprofessorin an der LMU.
